Bharatia Parished (BP), a bachelors’ organisation, will hold a ‘token protest programme’ on August 11 in front of the National Press Club against harassment of bachelors by police and house owners. The one-hour programme will start at 8pm. The leaders of BP called upon all the bachelors to take part in the programme with pillows.
The leaders of the organisation announced the programme in a press briefing in Nirmolsen Auditorium in the city’s Shegunbagicha area on Tuesday. They demanded safety of the bachelors, construction of residences for the bachelors, to stop the harassment of bachelors in the name of searching for terrorists by police and to nab the real culprit. President of BP Baharaney Sultan Bahar read the keynote paper in the press briefing. General Secretary of BP Jannat Fatema, 14-party leader Harun Chowdhury, Primary Teachers’ leader Shamsul Alam, Central leader of BP Md Mostafa, Jamal Sikder, Md Shamim, Rubel, Al Amin, Maya, Lavli Yeasmin, Tapan Shaha, Sultana Akhter, Farid Khan, Kabir Chowdhury Tonmoy were present at the programme, among others. Baharaney Sultan Bahar said, police harass bachelors’ professionals and students during any anti-militant drive in residential areas while many owners have asked them to leave apartments by next month. Unmarried working people and students are also facing difficulties to hire new accommodations over the militant issue, he said.
Bharatia Parishad also demanded implementation of the Premises Rent Control Act 1991 to make sure that the owners sign contracts with the tenants while renting out the accommodations.
The implementation of the Act will ensure proper information about the tenants as well as huge revenue collection from the sector, said the Bharatia Parishad president. He also noted that bachelors from across the country account for major part of the city population.
Bahar said, there are 3.5 million bachelors in the country. Due to the harassment by police and owners, the bachelors cannot move easily. The bachelors overall life style will be hampered if the harassment in the name of searching continues.
