Atika Jannat, a 45-day old girl, was allegedly strangulated to death by their relatives for its ‘ugly shape structure’ at their house in Arankola area in Ishwardi upazila in Pabna district on Saturday night.
Police recovered the wrapping body from inside the almirah in their house after a long search.
The family members killed the baby as per pre-instruction of the father of the baby and its grandfather to save their dignity in the society, Md Azimuddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station, told The New Nation on sunday evening.
They also confessed that that baby was unfit in height and weight while the shape was almost ugly an strange that was neglected by
locals, the Police official said. The family condition was utra-poor that raised a question how they would nurture they baby and arrange a marriage, the OC said.
The mainly killd the baby in fear of carrying the cost, turning more worse condition and paying dowry during marriage, he added.
Meanwhile, Police detained Atika’s father Ashraful Islam, 33, grandfather Md Ayub Ali Khan, 72, grandmother Selina Khan, 68, and Ashraful’s aunt Jotsna Khatun, 57, in connection with the death, the OC said.
Police suspect that the baby might have been strangulated to death, he said.
On information that someone stole Atika from their home on Saturday noon, police started finding out her.
Police searched the house around 11:00pm as they found suspicious behaviour of the infant’s father, he added.
Police, later, recovered the baby wrapping with clothes inside the Almirah of its house, he further said.
Nishi Khatun, the infant’s mother, said she went on roof top of their house in the afternoon lying Atika on bed. But she saw her daughter was not there after returning room, he added.
