UNB, Shariatpur :
Five hours after being declared dead at a clinic in the district town, a newborn baby was found alive on Monday.
The family members of the baby said Shikha Akhter, 19, wife of Sohel Bepari of Dashrashmi village in Sadar upazila, was admitted to Safe Delivery Centre and Surgical Home in the district town on Sunday night after she complained of labour pain. Shikha gave birth to a baby girl around 1am with the help of the duty nurses in the absence of doctors. But the girl was declared dead. Later, Shikha was taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital as her own condition deteriorated. Talking to reporters, Shikha’s husband Sohel Bepari said clinic nurse Lovely urged Baby’s mother-in-law (mother’s mother) Hawa Bibi to take the baby away from the clinic on Monday morning.
When Hawa Bibi went to the baby, perhaps for the last time before it was laid to rest, she saw the baby started moving its hands and legs around 6am when Hawa went to the baby kept on a bed in the clinic.
Later, the baby was admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. When contacted, clinic authorities categorically refused to talk to the reporter in this regard. Civil surgeon of Sadar Hospital Dr Mashiur Rahman said a prematurely delivered baby had been admitted to the hospital on Monday morning, adding that we’ve referred the baby to Dhaka following deterioration in her condition. Dr Rahman was the first to venture at the baby’s gender, identifying her as a girl.
