Jukta Front chairman AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury urged the government and the President to convene a special session of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) immediately to amend the existing laws to ensure road safety.
He made the call while speaking at a press conference at his Baridhara residence. B Chowdhury, also a former President, greeted students for waging their movement demanding road safety imbued with patriotism.
He thinks the government has taken a serious wrong step by ‘unleashing Chhatra League’ men against demonstrating students. “You (govt) must stop it immediately.”
“A special session of parliament must be convened to amend the relevant laws on road safety on emergency basis… we draw the attention of the President and the Prime Minister to take prompt steps to this end,” B Chowdhury said.
He said the students exposed that many vehicles and drivers of law enforcers and other public offices have no licence and valid paper and document due to the incompetence of different departments and corruption. “We hope the government will take lesson from it and take steps to remove corruption.”
The former president said the laws relating to the transport sector need to be overhauled to restore discipline in it.
Speaking at the programme, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna demanded resignation of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan as he is the main reason behind the chaos in transport sector.
He urged the government to immediately accept the agitating students’ nine-point demand.
