UNB, Dhaka :
A group of Bangladeshi specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeons on Monday urged the people and the government to raise awareness about the dangers of oral cancer.
They made the call at a discussion titled ‘Oral Cancer: Bangladesh Perspective’ arranged by Bangladesh Oral Cancer Society at Jaitya Press Club marking World Cancer Day.
According to WHO, lip and oral cancer come in at 11th among the top 20 causes of deaths in Bangladesh.
“In our country, there is no data on the lip and oral cavity cancer patients,” said Bangladesh Oral Cancer Society Organisational Secretary Dr Shakhawat Hossain Shayantha.
He pointed out three major elements heightening the risk of oral cancer – tobacco, alcohol and food habit.
Cancer Specialist Dr Syed Akram Hossain mentioned that 30 percent of all the cancer cases are related to tobacco consumption, whereas 35 percent are linked to food consumption.
“Cancer can be cured completely in our country. If the government makes the health and medicine sectors tax-free, the treatment will become cheaper,” he said.
Bangladesh Oral Cancer Society President Professor Dr Matiur Rahman Molla presided over the event and urged the media to raise awareness among the public about oral cancer and its causes.
