Speakers at a discussion here on Friday unequivocally called for creating awareness about the importance of protecting planet Earth and mother nature for the sake of survival of all the living beings.They viewed that the environment has been facing a serious threat due to various natural and manmade catastrophes posing identical threat to the planet Earth at present.
The Department of Environment (DoE) and District Administration jointly organized the discussion at Shilpakala Academy auditorium in observance of the World Environment Day-2015. “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care” was the main theme of the day.
Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Helaluddin Ahmed and Divisional Forest Officer Ajit Kumar Rudra addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi, in the chair. Nurul Alam, Assistant Director of DoE, Rajshahi, welcomed the participants.
During his keynote presentation, Professor Dr Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu of Geology and Mining Department of Rajshahi University, said: “This year, the day is focusing on the need to respect the carrying capacity of the planet and to manage natural resources efficiently-all aspects that are of utmost importance if we really want to ensure prosperity and wellbeing globally.” He added that the U.N. reports that at the current rate of population growth coupled with consumption patterns, humankind will need three planets to sustain itself by the year 2050.
Various government and non-government organizations including BELA, volunteers and schoolboys and girls joined the meeting. The speakers said emphasis should be given on providing positive incentives for the reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and enhancing biodiversity conservation as well as promoting sustainable development goals of the region.
They called for creating awareness among all concerned including the younger generations and massive tree plantation to prevent environmental degradation that severely threatens existence of the whole planet, its habitation and civilization.
