Awareness for preventing AIDS stressed

Speakers at an advocacy meeting have said there is no alternative to creating awareness in preventing further spread of HIV/AIDS through disseminating education, knowledge and social values among vulnerable group people.
Rangpur Drop-in-Centre (DIC)-2 of Help & Education for
Least-privileged People (HELP) organised the meeting at its office on
‘HIV Prevention & Control among High Risk Population and Vulnerable
Young People in Bangladesh’ on Sunday.
With Headmaster of Rangpur Adarsha High School Shawkat Ali in the chair, valiant freedom fighter Kamal Hossain attended the community advocacy meeting as the chief guest.
Manager of City Health Service Centre Shahzad Hossain, valiant freedom fighter Atoaruzzaman Lanchu, noted businessman Rostam Ali and Sub-inspector of Rangpur Railway Police Camp Nazrul Islam addressed the meeting as special guests.
Outreach Supervisor of Rangpur DIC-2 of HELP Ahsan Ali Khan delivered welcome speech narrating goals and objectives of the advocacy meeting and called for creating adequate social awareness to prevent further spread of the deadly diseases.
Coordinator of Rangpur DIC-2 of HELP Mamunur Rahman presented the keynote paper narrating the present HIV/AIDS situation and activities of the organisation in expanding essential services to the street-based, floating and hotel/residence-based sex workers.
The local community leaders, transport workers, teachers, public representatives, social workers, religious leaders, civil society members, hijra community people, journalists and elite participated in the meeting.
Taking part in the discussion, the speakers said the killer HIV/AIDS diseases have been posing formidable threats to human life and social health with possibilities of further spreading, as the situation in the neighbouring countries is already vulnerable.
The situation could turn worse if the vulnerable group people continue their unsafe sexual habit and blood donation as those increase possibility of spreading the HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, they said.
They asked the community leaders and common people for conducting awareness building campaign for all people, including the vulnerable groups and floating sex workers in both urban and rural areas, to work against these silent killer diseases.
In his speech, the chief guest put especial emphasis on bringing the sexually minority population, hijra people, transport workers and socially backward population under the prevention programme for preventing spread of these deadly diseases.
