Avijt’s another publisher stabbed dead at Shahbagh

Hours after the attack on a publisher of slain writer and blogger Avijit Roy’s books and two writers in the city’s Lalmatia area, his another publisher was stabbed to death by miscreants on the third floor of Aziz Super Market in the city’s Shahbagh area.

The deceased was identified as Faisal Arefin Dipan, 45, publisher of Jagriti publication house, and son of former professor of Dhaka University’s Bangla department Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq.

Assistant commissioner (Ramna Zone) of police Shibly Noman said Dipan was found lying in a pool of blood in his publication house in the evening.

He was first taken to Square Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead around 7:15 pm.

Earlier in the day, Ahmedur Rashid Tutul, publisher of ‘Shuddhoswar Prokashoni’ and two writers — Sudeep Kumar Roy Barman alias Ranadeep Basu and Tareque Rahim — were stabbed by some unidentified miscreants in the city’s Lalmatia area.

While talking to reporters at the DMCH, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner (media wing) Muntasirul Islam said primarily it can be said that it is a planned murder.

“No one has been arrested yet in connection with the murder. We hope the killers will be hunted down soon,” he said.

Avijit Roy, founder of Mukto-Mona blog, was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured seriously as unidentified criminals stabbed them near TSC on the Dhaka University campus on February 26.

Avijit, son of former professor of physics Department at the Dhaka University Ajoy Roy, and Rafida, an expatriate couple living in the USA, returned home a few days ahead of the horrific incident as his two books were published on the occasion of Amar Ekushey Book Fair.

One month into the killing of blogger Avijit Roy, another blogger named Washiqur Rahman Babu was hacked to death by a group of assailants at Begunbari of Tejgoan industrial area of the city on March 30.

On May 12 last, blogger Ananta Bijoy Das, also an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Mancha, was hacked to death by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Subidbazar Bankalapara in Sylhet city.

Besides, on August 7, blogger Niladri Chaterjee alias Niloy was hacked to death in his rented flat in the city’s Khilgaon area. — Dhaka, Oct 31 (UNB)
