Avijit’s wife blasts police for its role during murder

Joynal Abedin Khan :Slain blogger Avijit Roy’s wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya claimed on her face book account’ post yesterday that police was absolutely inactive during the murder by a gang of assailants at a crowded area of Dhaka University on February 26.”Police stood up beside the spot like as silent viewers where Avijit was murdered ferociously,” she alleged. Police and witnesses did not come forward to save them during the gruesome killing near Shahbagh Police Station, Bonya claimed.”Why the members of law enforcing agencies did not arrest anyone of the killers,” she opined. In a statement, Bonya said: “Now, we demand that the Bangladeshi government do everything in its power to bring the murderers to justice.”Terming the attack as a “crime not only against a person, but against freedom of speech and humanity,” she said: “I do not believe that simply catching the killers will be enough.”Claiming that Avijit was murdered for possessing progressive ideology, Bonya said: “My husband, Avijit Roy, wrote about science and rationalism and religious fundamentalism. Because of this, he was murdered.””We were supposed to be going back home to have dinner with the family. I think I was holding his hand and we were just talking. I do not remember anything from that point until I was in some sort of vehicle and someone was carrying me. I remember I was soaked in blood,” she said,Speaking to the BBC from a safe location, she said fundamentalism had “taken deep roots” in Bangladesh.Meanwhile, Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday handed over evidences of murder of Avijit Roy to the visiting team of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after the permission of court, said Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of DMP.Investigators of Detective Branch had taken a decision to arrest 10 more people over the murder of Avijit, who had threatened the writer-blogger on social media.The suspect extremists were behind the killing, the DB spokesman claimed.Shafiur Rahman Farabi, who is known to preach extremism on social media, was arrested four days after the killing, the police official said. “The FBI said that the killing appears to have been carried out by extremist groups,” he added.
