Strike of prime movers, workers: Average staying period of foreign vessels in Ctg Port increased

Following the strike of the Prime Movers, trailors owners and workers in Chittagong Port, the average staying period of foreign vessels in Chittagong port enhanced recently .
As a result the traders, importers are becoming loser. Port sources said in normal period, a vessel is required 48 hours to leave the port berth after discharging the consignment but this period increased to 72 hours on average.
Port sources said lack of space in the container sheds ,this situation arised. They said if 24 thousand containers is stored in the sheds, quick unloading of containers further becomes impossible .At present due to 4 days strike of the prime movers, about 40 thouand containers stocked in the port shed.
 A sources of Bangladesh Inland container Deport Asociation said in 16 private ICDs in Chittaagong about 47 thousand containers are stored aimed at sending to port sheds but due to space crisis in port sheds, the ICDs could not send export cargo laden containers to port . Member(Admn and Planning) Md. Jafar Alam told the media that 16 foreign vessels were waiting in outer berth on Tuesday but lack of space in sheds, these vessesl could not took berth at container berth and hence the average staying of vessels in outer and inner berths increased.
 President of BICDA Nurul Kaiyum Khan told the media that for this unwanted situation in the port, the business community as well as the nation is facing economic disaster.
 BICDA secretary Ruhul Amin sikder said there is no alternative of developing more yards within the port areas as well as in the 16 private ICDs within short possible time.
