Autorickshaws, vans and cash assistance have been distributed among the beggars in Ishwardi under the beggar rehabilitation program.
The assistance was distributed at the Upazila Parishad premises on Sunday (April 4) as part of the beggar rehabilitation prog ram at the Upazila Social Service Officer’s Office.
The chief guest was Alhaj Naib Ali Biswas, Chairman of Upazila Parishad. Upazila Nirbahi Officer PM Imrul Kayes presided over the function. Vice Chairman Atia Ferdous Kakli and Social Service Officer Masud Rana were present on the occasion.
The upazila chairman said begging was a disgrace to an independent nation. The work of rehabilitation has started in Ishwardi on the initiative of Hon’ble Prime Minister to discourage begging.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer PM Imrul Kayes said the government has taken special measures to make the beggars self-reliant. Following this, two beggars were given autorickshaws, one beggar was given an auto van and one beggar was given cash assistance for alternative employment. He added that a list of those involved in begging in the upazila has been prepared. Alternative employment opportunities are being created to stop their begging. Beggars will be eliminated in 8 unions and municipalities of the upazila subject to receipt of money. Ishwardi Upazila beggars will be released in phases with the help of the Prime Minister’s Fund and the Ministry of Social Welfare, he said.
