Automation in electricity distribution system stressed

Automation in electricity distribution system is very important as around eighty percent of the customer power interruptions are caused due to faults in the distribution system.
“The distribution system is one of the most vital portions of the total electric supply chain so its automation has become crucial,” said Engineer Zakiul Islam, Managing Director of Northern Electric Supply Company (NESCO) Limited, while presenting his keynote paper in a seminar.
Rajshahi Chapter of Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) and its Department of Mechanical Engineering organized the seminar styled “Roles of Engineers in Automation of Electricity Distribution System” at their conference hall here on nTuesday evening.
Engineer Islam said modernization of distribution system is mandatory for the utilization of Smart Grid effectively. With lots of problems in this sector, the implementation of substation automation in the distribution sector is a challenging task.
He, however, said the present government has given top priority to the development of the power sector considering its importance in overall development of the country and has set the goal of providing electricity to all citizens by 2020.
Engineer Zakiul Islam told the seminar that the NESCO has been implementing a mega project aims at enhancing the power production capacity to meet the growing demand of power in the region besides attaining the ultimate goal of creating regional balance in power production.
The four and half year project titled “Rajshahi Division Distribution line and Substation Extension and Rehabilitation” is being implemented in Rajshahi City Corporation and 21 Upazilas in eight districts under Rajshahi division.
The Taka 1091.32 crore project will increase the capacity by 470 MVA side by side with providing 2.35 lakh new power connections upon its successful implementation by June 2022. The project has been designed for standard up-gradation and rehabilitation of twenty 33/11 KV sub-stations, installation of 3,851 distribution transformers, 25 circuit breakers, 311 capacitor banks and three new 33/11 KV power sub-stations, erection of 2,042.5-kilometer new lines and rehabilitation of 1,411-kilometer dilapidated lines.
Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the seminar as chief guest while IEB local unit chairman Engineer Lutfor Rahman was in the chair.
IEB Vice-president Engineer Nuruzzaman and its General Secretary Engineer Khandaker Monzur Murshed and Vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology Prof Rafiqul Islam Sheikh and IEB local unit vice-president Engineer Nizamul Haque also spoke.
