Different student organizations and socio-cultural forums on Thursday observed ‘Autocracy Resistance Day’ recalling the uprising that forced the rescission of Mazid Khan Education Commission report in 1983.
The student uprising pushed to forge a greater students’ unity against the military rule of HM Ershad.
Recalling the day, Ganasanhati Andolon, Shairachar Birodhi Chhatra Parishad, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, and like-minded organisations brought out a procession in the city and placed wreaths at the Shikkha Adhikar Chattar in front of Shikkha Bhaban near the Dhaka University.
During the martial law regime of HM Ershad On February 14, 1983, students marched towards Bangladesh Secretariat protesting against the Abdul Mazid Khan-led education commission report. They also demanded to restore democracy in the country.
Police fired bullets and lobbed teargas shells into the procession, killing several students and injuring several hundred on the day.
The students’ uprising in 1983 was seen as the beginning of a movement that ultimately toppled the Ershad regime in 1990. It paved the way to restore democracy through inclusive election held in 1991.
