Staff Reporter :
Speakers at a discussion meeting on Saturday expressed their deep anxiety over the government’s decision of giving students auto-promotion without holding examinations.
They said, auto-pass instead of HSC and other examination is part of a ploy to destroy the country’s education system and the future of the nation.
The discussion held at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital was organized by Education Reform Initiative (ERI) titled ‘Auto-Pass in the Examinations During Corona and the Present and Future of Education’.
The speakers urged the government to review the decision.
Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder, was the Chief Guest in the programme.
He said that when everything was reopened after the relaxation of the coronavirus shutdown, there is no reason to keep the educational institutions closed and to cancel exams on the pretext of checking the corona.
“This is nothing but a ploy to destroy the nation. This government did it as it got auto-promotion without any test during 2014 and 2018,” he said.
“One reason can be there behind giving students auto-promotion to destroy the country’s education system and force them to go to other countries,” said Dr. Zafrullah.
He said that thousands of Bangladeshi students are now going to India for studies in recent years.
Dr. Zafrullah, a Freedom Fighter, said India is earning more than fifty times higher benefits a year from Bangladesh than the country spent for one crore Bangladeshi refugees during eight months of the Liberation War in 1971. Within references from different newspaper reports, Dr. Zafrullah said India received 128 billion Dollars from Bangladesh as remittance in 2018.
He said, around 10 lakh Indians have been working in Bangladesh now.
“On the other hand, number of students in the country remains unemployed despite having different degrees, as Bangladesh’s education quality has been falling gradually.
He criticized political parties like the BNP and the CPB for their inactive role regards the government’s decision of adopting auto pass-system.
He said, the largest opposition party BNP and other parties of dedicated persons like CPB are also exercising it as their leaders are holding posts based on an auto-system.
Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said the government is in fear of facing a student movement so that they have not re-opened educational institutes.
He said when a government has been installed through the auto-pass, they will naturally think about auto-promotion of students.
He said, “Auto-pass is a matter of shame. The students, who are getting the auto-promotion now, will have to bear it as a stigma in their whole life.”
He called students to raise their voice against it.
Former State Minister for Education Ehsanul Haque Milon said auto-promotion cannot be acceptable because it will harm the nation and the country’s education system.
“They has adopted it without considering about other alternatives. The exams can be held on a small scale,” he said.
