Suranjit Sengupta, MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, on Monday said the authority to
impeach the judges will be brought back to the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) amending the constitution in the coming session of parliament.
“The authority to impeach the judges that was in the constitution of 1972 and repealed through a martial ordinance will be brought back to the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) in its ensuing session through 16th amendment to the constitution,” he said. Suranjit Sengupta, also a member of the Advisory Council of the ruling Awami League and former Railway Minister, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city. Nauka Samarthak Goshthy, a body of supporters of Awami League’s polls symbol ‘boat’, organised the discussion at the Hall Room of the Central Public Library at Shahbag in the capital marking the 10th anniversary of martyrdom of Awami League’s women affairs secretary Ivy Rahman.
Adviser of the organisation Haji Mohammad Selim, MP, chaired the discussion, also addressed, among others, by president of the organisation Humayun Kabir Mizi. Suranjit Sengupta said, “In the constitution of 1972, authority was entrusted with the Jatiya Sangsad for impeachment of judges.
Later, the army-backed government repealed it. In the 15th amendment to the constitution, the authority in this regard should be returned to the Jatiya Sangsad but it could not be done due to a vested quarter.”
Pointing at BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the senior Awami League leader said, “We don’t know as to why he became so excited all of sudden and where he got hurt. But, we could understand that he became excited for their mistakes and misleading politics not to retain their party activists.”
