Authorities have started removing the illegal shacks on the banks of Shitalakhya, used by fugitive Narayanganj City Councillor Nur Hossain for his sand business. The numerous tin-roofed shacks, more than 50, belong to the councillor, his brother Joj Miah and their business partners who used them for selling sand and stones. Alamgir Kabir, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Narayanganj terminal, said all these shacks will be evicted in the drive that began early on Tuesday. Ward -4 Councillor Nur Hossain is the prime accused in the abduction and murder of Ward 2 Councillor Nazrul Islam and six others whose bodies were found floating on Shitalakhya River at Bandar Upazila on Apr 30. He is also the vice-president of Awami League’s Siddhirganj unit at Narayanganj. Police arrested 12 people and seized a van after raiding his home at Shimrail on Saturday. They also revoked the licenses for 11 firearms that belong to Nur Hossain and his aides. Border guards and Benapole immigration police have also been put on high alert to stop the suspect from fleeing to India. –bdnews24.com
