Xinhua, Sydney :
Australia unveiled its new 10-dollar note on Friday which will begin circulation on Sept. 20.
Among the first to touch the new bill was members of the blind and vision-impaired community at an event in Melbourne.
“It’s a wonderful step forward,” Vision Australia’s senior communications advisor Sharon Mackenzie told Xinhua on Thursday.
“It makes it so much easier to identify notes and it’s a much more dignified way for people who are blind or vision impaired to manage their own money.”
Although previous standard notes are different sizes, they are still be very difficult to identify.
“If you have a few bills you can determine what you have by measuring one against the other,” Mackenzie said.
“But it is more difficult when you only have a single bill or you are at a busy counter and there are people queuing up behind you.”
The bill is now the second in Australia to include a tactile marking, after the county’s new five dollar note was entered into circulation during 2016.
