Australian High Commissioner in Dhaka Greg Wilcock has said Australia is proud to welcome the Bangladesh cricket team and its fans.
“Australia is proud to welcome the Bangladesh cricket team and its fans. The World Cup is an opportunity to celebrate our enduring relationships, and to celebrate our thriving trade, family and education links,” an Australian High Commission press release quoting Wilcock said here on Monday.
Mentioning that the Australian and Bangladesh teams will play each other at the Gabba in Brisbane on February 21, the High Commissioner said “Although my loyalty to the Bangladesh team might lapse that day, I otherwise look forward to seeing the Tigers perform strongly.”
The High Commissioner said people in Australia and Bangladesh will be tuning in on television, radio and online to watch teams from across the world battle it out for the World Cup. “Of course, cricket remains essential to our people-to-people ties – ties we saw renewed when Bangladesh hosted the ICC T20 World Cup last year.”
Thirteen nations will join together with Australia for this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, which commences on February 14 in Melbourne and Christchurch.
Some of the best cricketers in the world, including the most promising young and upcoming stars, will participate in 49 matches in Australia and New Zealand, over six weeks.
The tournament will be the biggest sporting event in the world in 2015, engaging one-fifth of the world’s population and attracting a television audience of more than one billion people.
