BSS, Dhaka :
Australian High Commission to Dhaka established Australia-Bangladesh business council for increasing trade between the countries, Federal Member of Parliament (Werriwa) Laurie Ferguson said.
“I hope the initiative taken by the high commission will boost up bilateral trade between Australia and Bangladesh in the days ahead,” he told BSS.
The Australian Member of Parliament (MP) now on a weeklong visit in Bangladesh, said the trade volume between the two counties reached around US$ 1 billion, adding that the relationship with Bangladesh will grow further.
“Our two-way trade now stands at US$ 1 billion, reflecting Bangladesh’s significant economic growth and our highly complementary commercial strengths,” he said.
About Bangladesh’s Readymade Garment Industries, Laurie Ferguson said the garment industries are crucial for Bangladesh as there are many women employees.
“We cannot support the extreme low wages, so that nobody goes below the standard,” he said. But the wages condition in Bangladesh is growing up, he said.
In Australia, security, cleaning industry, the wages and condition are going down all time, because each company is offering for doing money, the Australian MP said.
Describing product cost, he said some companies from Germany, France, USA and other countries are offering lower cost for RMG products, but Australia should not allow forcing for lower cost, adding, “You can’t continue to have a rise between Cambodia, China, Vietnam and Bangladesh to significant lost in wages and we fight internationally for minimum, conditions.”
He said the condition of Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector is good and some of the company’s activities are impressive and the wages condition is growing up.
Ferguson said, “On wages condition, we have same thing in Australia, employers tell us all time, every one said why should come down because we can’t compete with China. Some industries in Australia, we understand that we cannot compete, so we surrendered, because china is so low.”
He said cost is low in Bangladesh than China, Vietnam, Indonesia and other countries.
According to present scenario between Australia-Bangladesh trade, Australia imports mostly basic foodstuffs, which contribute to food price stability, or raw materials, while Bangladesh exports to Australia include garments, textiles and fertilizer.
Bangladesh exports to Australia in recent years have been impressive. The pace of increased exports started accelerating.
