AFP, Los Angeles :
Australian golfer Steven Bowditch apologized on Friday after his overnight arrest on suspicion of drink driving in Arizona, where he was competing in the USPGA Tour Phoenix Open.
“I would like to apologize to my family, friends and supporters, as well as the PGA Tour and Waste Management Phoenix Open for the incident reported today,” he said in a statement after his round on Friday.
“As I intend to fully cooperate with the authorities, I will not be making further comment at this stage.”
Bowditch was charged with “extreme driving under the influence” after testing for a blood alcohol content of more than 0.20, police said.
The legal limit in Arizona is .08.
Police sergeant Ben Hoster told the Arizona Republic that Bowditch, who has a home near Dallas, Texas, was booked into jail because he was an out of state resident, and later released on bond.
Bowditch made his second-round tee time at the Phoenix Open on Friday, but fired his second straight 74 to miss the cut.
He was arrested shortly after 1 am after a motorist called police to report a white vehicle swerving on the road.
Shortly thereafter, a Scottsdale officer found the vehicle at an intersection with Bowditch asleep at the wheel, police said.
