Authorities of Rajshahi University (RU) have apparently granted immunity to the armed Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) cadres by filing cases only against the general students who were protesting the increased fees and evening courses.
Police and RU authorities filed six cases against the agitating students on Monday night but they did not file any case against the armed BCL men who carried out attack on general students during the Sunday’s incident on the varsity campus.
A total of 964 students were accused, naming 224 students, in these cases but no Chhatra League men was made accused in the cases lodged with Motihar police station.
RU authorities filed two cases against a total 400 students naming 100 and police filed two cases against a total of 400 students, naming 100 students, while RU unit BCL filed two cases against 140 students, naming 24.
In the cases, the leaders of the left-leaning students’ organizations at RU namely Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Somajtantrik Chhatra Front, Chhatra Federation and Biplobi Chhatra Moitree were made accused.
In the all cases, Shibir RU unit president Ashraful Alam Emon, a master’s student of history department of the university also made accused, Motihar police sources said.On Sunday, BCL men and police jointly attacked the agitating students where the some BCL leaders were seen firing openly on the protesters under the very nose of the law enforcers and the assistant proctors of the university.
During the attack, RU unit Chattra League organizing secretaries Shamsuzzaman Emon and Faisal Ahmed Runu, joint secretaries Nasim Ahmed Setu and Mahbubur Rahman Polash, environment affairs secretary Mustakim Billah, former joint secretary Sudipta Salam and another outsider were seen brandishing guns at the students.
The photographs and identities of the armed men were published in the newspaper on Monday and Tuesday. But police and the university authorities did not file any case against the armed BCL men.
When asked why no case was filed against them, the university registrar Prof Entajul Haque said, “How can I say about not filling cases against the armed cadres? You better asked the higher authorities.
When contacted, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Zahan said, On Sunday night an emergency syndicate meeting took the decision to file a general diary about the violence and brandishing firearms.
“What the syndicate has decided will be executed,” Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Proloy Chisym told The New Nation yesterday, adding, “There is no need to file a separate case against the armed Chattra League men”
The filling of six cases would cover all the allegations, may it be armed or unnamed attack.
When asked why there was no name of the armed men in the cases, he said, there are many unnamed men in the filling cases. He, however, said, police were trying to arrest the armed men.
However, Sudipta Salam, one of the armed men was seen roaming freely on the campus.
On the other hand, The BCL central committee has suspended Nasim Ahmed Setu, RU unit joint secretary and Shamsuzzaman Emon, organizing secretary.
RU BCL vice president Mehedi Hasan said, “Some BCL men think brandishing firearms is an easy way to get vital posts in the organization. But it is not true.”
Meanwhile, police arrested a BCL leader on Wednesday afternoon for his alleged involvement in the attack on agitating students of RU that left 100 students injured and 20 bullet-hit.
Motiher police station officer-in-charge Shamsur Nur told The New Nation yesterday.
Police, on information, raided and held BCL RU unit vice-president Delowar Hossain from a house in Rajshahi city’s Beripara area at around 4:00pm, he said.
Delowar was shown arrest in the unnaming lists of the four cases, two of them filed by RU authorities and two by police separately, Nur also said.
Earlier on Sunday, a general student identified as Sajeeb Ahmed, a fourth year student of finance and banking department was arrested and sent to jail after producing to the court.
Motiher police station officer-in-charge, Shamsur Nur told newsmen, the investigation into all six cases started on Wednesday, adding the cases were distributed among the investigation officers.
