Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA), Bangladesh Campus Journalists’ Federation (BCJF) and journalists from different print and electronic media on Monday condemned the attack on journalists during the ongoing students movement for safe road. DUJA Office Secretary Rayhanul Islam Abir issued a press release saying that, DUJA President Asif Tasin and General Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Nayon in a statement condemned and protested the attack and harassment of journalists when they were performing their professional duties near the capital’s Science Laboratory, Dhanmondi and Jigatola areas.
The leaders demanded punishment to the attackers to ensure safety of the journalists. BCJF Convener Asif Tasin and Member Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Nayon also issued a press release condemning the incident and said, at least 30 journalists were injured and harassed during road safety movement. “This attack is a sign of making logical, peaceful and spontaneous student movement questionable. We condemn and protest the incident. Simultaneously, we urge the government to ensure the freedom of press,” they added.
Meanwhile, a section of journalists from different print and electronic media formed a human chain on Monday afternoon at Karwan Bazar intersection and demanded exemplary punishment to those who attacked the on-duty journalists during the student movement.
Speaking at the human chain, the journalists equivocally urged the authorities concerned to take step for stopping such attacks on the media men for the sake of freedom of press.
“Journalists will not remain silent from speaking the truth in the face of such attacks”, they said. Over a dozen journalists of came under attacks at different places across the capital in the last two days when they were capturing pictures of clashes that took place centering the student movement.
