DNCC by-polls: Atiqul submits nomination form

Atiqul Islam, the Awami League mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), submitted his nomination paper to the Election Commission on Tuesday.
The post fell vacant after the death of Annisul Huq in November 2017. An election to elect a new mayor is scheduled for February 28.
“I will continue the unfinished works of Annisul Huq, if elected,”
the former BGMEA chief said, promising to work with honesty and sincerity.
He was flanked by former Bangladesh Bank governor Mohammed Farashuddin, FBCCI President Shafiul Islam, BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman and MCCI President Barrister Nihad Kabir.
Atiqul thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for picking him as the ruling party’s candidate.
The deadline for nomination paper submission will expire on Wednesday. As of Tuesday, 25 aspirants collected mayoral nominations papers. Only Atiqul has submitted his nomination paper, the returning officer said.
Besides, 197 councillor aspirants collected nomination for 18 posts in 18 new wards of DNCC, while 30 women aspirants purchased nominations against the six reserved seats in the same wards, the election officer said.
Of them, only 12 councillor aspirants submitted their nomination papers.
The EC on January 22 announced schedules for by-polls to DNCC mayoral post, and election to its councillor posts in 18 new wards. The councilor posts in as many new wards under Dhaka South City Corporation are also going to polls.
