Sylhet Bureau :
Members of Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh’s (ATAB) Sylhet chapter yesterday formed a human chain to push for their six-point demand including introduction of direct flights from Sylhet to UK, USA and Saudi Arabia.
Their two-hour human chain ended following assurance from Biman officials to hold a discussion within a week for chalking out a plan of action.
The other demands include: reserving sufficient number of U-class (special or discounted economy class) seats in Sylhet-Jeddah flights; arranging food and accommodation facility of international standard for Sylhet passengers and arranging at least four flights from Sylhet for Hajj pilgrims.
Earlier on March 10, they submitted a memorandum to Biman authorities and gave them a ten-day ultimatum.
As authorities of Biman Bangladesh Airlines did not take any measure to address their demands, ATAB men formed the human chain in front of Biman office at Chowkidekhi of Sylhet city at around 11am.
Later, at around 1pm, Biman’s Sylhet office manager Helal Uddin held a meeting with ATAB officials.
In the meeting, Helal Uddin assured that senior Biman officials from Dhaka will visit Sylhet within eight days to discuss the matter. Then necessary steps will be taken to address the demands, said Jiaur Rahman Khan, general secretary of ATAB Sylhet chapter.
He added, ‘A significant number of passengers from Sylhet travel through Biman in different routes. But still they are neglected and deprived of due facilities. We demand an end to this discrimination.’
