At least 10 people have been killed after a three-storey residential building collapsed in Bhiwandi near Mumbai in India, according to media reports.
At least 25 others are believed to be trapped in the ruins.
Intial reports indicate that 31 people have been rescued from the rubble of the building in Patel Compound area after it collapsed reportedly around 3:40 am on Monday. A child was among the 11 people rescued by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials while the rest were pulled out by locals, according to NDTV.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish over the building collapse and said all possible assistance is being provided to the affected.
Television showed pictures a rescue dog running over the rubble of the building in Bhiwandi, on the outskirts of Mumbai, Reuters reports.
NDRF chief Satya Pradhan said in a tweet that 20 to 25 people were reportedly trapped, and rescue teams had been dispatched.
Building collapses are commonplace in India, particularly during the seasonal monsoon rains, due to old and often illegal construction. There was no immediate reason provided for the latest incident in Bhiwandi.
