The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why its inaction to repair embankments damaged by 2007 Sidr in the country’s southern districts.
Issuing the rule, upon a pubic interest litigation (PIL) writ petition, an HC division bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Ejarul Haque Akondo also asked the government to explain why direction should not be given to take steps to construct or repair the damaged embankments quickly.
Besides, the HC asked the water resources and local government secretaries to submit within three months a report on the damage of embankments after surveying the Sidr-hit areas in Barguna, Bagerhat, Patuakhali and Pirojpur districts.
