Staff Reporter :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Tuesday termed the incidents of sexual assault on women during Pahela Baishakh celebrations as ‘naughtiness of few youths’.
The police chief made the remarks while talking to journalists at Police Headquarters in the afternoon.
“How did four or five youths assault the women in presence of thousands of people at the Suhrawardy Udyan gate near the TSC when the Pahela Baishakh
celebrations were proceeding on the Dhaka University (DU) campus?” the IGP questioned.
“Why did not people catch the assaulters?” He further questioned.
“People could prevent the rowdiness of the youths if there was any case of assault in truth.” he said.
The IGP also said that Bangladesh Chhatra Union’s DU unit President Liton Nandi misguided the people regarding the incidents.
“He (Liton) is giving contradictory information from time to time,” the police chief told the media.
According to media reports, several women were sexually assaulted by a gang of rogues at the Suhrawardy Udyan gate near the TSC in the evening of Pahela Baishakh.
Liton Nandi’s right arm was broken when he tried to stop them. Later, the High Court directed the authorities concerned to investigate the incidents of sexual assault.
