Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Thursday said, the list of citizens in Assam is an internal affair of India and it will not hamstring the Indo-Bangladesh relationship.
“Making the list of citizens in Assam is an internal affair of India. It will determine who are its citizens and who are not. We will proceed in such a way as helpful to maintain bilateral relationship with our neighbouring Bangladesh,” he said.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla said to the journalists about the list of Assam’s citizens recently published after a meeting with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaiul Quader at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The draft list of citizens (National Register of Citizens or NRC) in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam was published on July 30 this year.
The list has stripped some four million people from citizenship. The NRC is a list of people who can prove that they went to Assam by March 24, 1971.
“The procedures are mandated by the Supreme Court of India. The government of India and the state government of Assam are duty-bound to follow the order of the Supreme Court. This is not a political process, but a judicial one and is overseen by judges of the Supreme Court,” he said.
“This is only a draft list. Each and every individual of Assam has ample time to submit proper papers about legality of their citizens.
