India Today, New Delhi :
The Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) list with individual statuses of all the 3.30 crore applicants was on Saturday published online. All the individuals in Assam, who were a part of the Assam NRC exercise meant to root out the illegal immigrants from the state, can now check their status on the official website of NRC.
All persons who had applied for the inclusion of their names in the NRC list and have a valid ARN number can check their final status online at nrcassam.nic.in. The list which was published on Saturday includes the names of those who have been accepted as the citizens of Assam, excluded and those whose appeals are pending. The Assam individuals can also check the names of their family members in the final list which has been published online. A total of 3,30,27,661 persons had applied for inclusion of their names in the updated list of NRC Assam. More than 19 lakh people in Assam were excluded from the final list of the NRC that was released by the government on August 31, while over three 3.11 crore persons were included. As per the guidelines issued by the Central government, the excluded persons can approach one of the 400 foreigners’ tribunals and appeal against their exclusions within 120 days of the publication of the final list. The tribunals are set up the government to hear the appeals of those who have been excluded from the Assam NRC list.
The foreigners’ tribunal will also issue certificates to the excluded people and explain them why they have been left out of the final list of NRC. Under the provisions of Foreigners Act, 1946 and Foreigners Tribunal Order, 1964, only the tribunals are empowered to declare a person as a foreigner.
Hence, non-inclusion of a person’s name in the final list of the NRC does not by itself amount to him/her being declared a foreigner.
Meanwhile, the Centre has withdrawn 10,000 paramilitary personnel deployed in Assam before the publication of the final NRC. The decision was taken as there has been no violence in Assam ever since the NRC, which validates bonafide Indian citizens of the northeastern state, was published on August 31, the officials said.
