UNB, Guwahati :
The Indian state of Assam is keen to introduce direct air connectivity with Bangladesh, as would be clear from the separate courtesy calls bythe state’s Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and its Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi to President Md Abdul Hamid at his hotel here on Thursday evening.
President Abdul Hamidand Jagdish Mukhi showed their keen interest on increasing the communication connectivity between the two countries to utilize the tourism potential, said president’s Press Secretary as quoted the meeting.
That would seem to fly in the face of recent fears and slogans fanned in the state by politicians of as the principal breeding ground for illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who are alleged to be shifting the social and demographic balance in Assam – always without any credible evidence to back up the claim.
The president arrived in India on Thursdayafternoon to attend the International Solar Alliance (ISA) summit of 121 countries in the solar power sector. But the conference in New Delhi is not until March 11th.
So Hamid decided to take advantage of the weekend preceding it to
visit two of the north-eastern states he shares a personal connection with – Assam and Meghalaya.
During 1971 Liberation War, he was a sub-sector commander of the Bangladesh Liberation Force (Mujib Bahini).
He inspired and organised Bangladeshi youths, who took shelter in India during the war, at Gumaghat, Moilam and Balat in Meghalaya. Hamid established a youth reception camp at Balat for Bangladeshi youths and he acted as president of the camp.
