Asian Theatre Summit begins

Two-day long International Theatre Summit titled ‘Asian Theatre Summit 2017’ began at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the city’s Segunbagicha area on Friday.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the theatre summit as the Chief Guest at the seminar hall of BSA while BSA DG and President of Asian Regional Centre of IATA Liaquat Ali Lucky presided over the inaugural session.
ITI worldwide President Ramendu Majumdar, President of ITI Bangladesh Center Nasiruddin Yusuf, playwright Abdus Selim, Jahangirnagar University Drama and Dramatics Department Prof Dr Afsar Ahmed, among others, were also present on the occasion.
Asian Regional Centre of International Amateur Theatre Association (IATA) in association with Peoples’ Theatre Association (PTA) and BSA organised the event aiming to build a relationship with Theatre organisations, theatre activists of Asian countries, and establish the traditional theatre of Asian regional countries.
Some 15 to 20 scholars from Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, are attending the seminars and lectures on a particular topic during the two-day summit.
The programme is featuring local Baul Sangeet, Charya Nritya, Gaudiya Nritya, children dance and theatre performance, Tagore’s drama, Loko Natya and Jartapala while guest artistes from Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia are presenting their local performances.
A compilation of essays titled ‘Theatre of Asia’ by Theatre experts also published at the Summit as book.
As a part of the summit, an Asian video theatre festival is also scheduled to be held at the International Digital Cultural Archive of BSA while a Children Art Exhibition by child artists of participating countries is being held at National Art Gallery.
BSA Secretary Jahangir Hossain Chowdhury, Vietnam Centre for Education and Community Development Executive Director Pham Thi Hong were also present at the inaugural ceremony.
