A conference of senior prison officials of Asia-Pacific region will be held here for the first time on May 16-19.
The 4-day conference titled ‘4th Asia Pacific Senior Correctional Manager’ will be held at a hotel in the city, said Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin while talking at a press briefing at the Department of Prison in the city’s Old Dhaka on Sunday.
A total of 53 representatives, including prison officials from 15 countries, will take part in the conference, he said.
The conference will discuss different issues, including the basic facilities the prisoners are getting in different countries of the region according to the Geneva Convention.
the ways to improve the amenities and ensuring their human rights, he added. Replying to a question, the IG Prison said the government took a decision to set up an open prison for the prisoners like many countries in the world and already the work for setting up an open prison is underway in Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar district.
