Staff Reporter :
An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police has been withdrawn on charge of negligence, which led to the death of a five-month old baby during a mugging incident in the city’s Dayaganj area.
The ASI was identified as Badrul Alam of Jatrabari Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He has been attached to Wari Division’s Deputy Commissioner’s office and will be waiting a formal investigation into the matter.
ASI Badrul was on duty at Dayaganj police check-post located
 nearby the incident of mugging.
However, ASI Badrul claimed that he had no involvement in the death of the baby.
The DMP’s Wari zone Deputy Commissioner Farid Uddin Ahmed said that the ASI has been withdrawn as per ‘administrative decision’.
He, however, claimed that the withdrawal was not at all related to the death of the child.
“Since a police check-post was just 50 yards from the incident spot, it falls under the jurisdiction of the check-post,” said Iftekharul Islam, Assistant Commissioner of Demra zone, Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
According to morgue sources, the baby, Arafat, died of brain hemorrhage sustained from the injuries due to the fall. A murder case has been filed with Jatrabari Police Station in this regard.
Earlier on Monday, a five-month old baby Arafat died after falling from the lap of her mother during snatching in the city.
The baby was in the lap of her mother who was riding in a rickshaw at Dayaganj area in the city in the morning to visit her sister’s residence.
At the time, a gang of muggers tried to snatch her vanity bag. For this, the baby falls off her lap and received severe injuries. He was taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) immediately where the on duty doctors declared him dead at about 7:00 am.
The deceased’s father Shah Alam filed a murder case with Jatrabari police station accusing an unidentified man.
