Suspended police officer Soumen Roy gave his confessional statement before a Kushtia court over shooting three people dead in broad daylight.
He was produced before the court of Md Rezaul Karim on Monday afternoon where the judge recorded his statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. He was later sent to jail.
On Sunday night, two cases were lodged against the police official with Kushtia Model police station.
Hasina Khatun, mother of deceased Asma Khatun – Soumen’s second wife, filed a case around 8pm while Mejbar Rahman, father of deceased Shakil Khan, filed another case at 11pm, confirms Officer in-Charge (OC) Sabbirul Alam. The same day, two separate inquiries were opened to deal with the matter.
The probe body formed by police’s Khulna Range was asked to file a report within two working days, while the other committee constituted by Kushtia district police was given seven working days.
Posted at Khulna’s Fultala police station as an assistant sub-inspector, Soumen was arrested on Sunday after publicly shooting three people dead in Kushtia town.
The shooting took place at a market on the PTI Road. The victims were identified as Asma Khatun and her six-year-old-son Robin, and bKash agent Shakil Khan.
Police say the boy was her child from a previous marriage, and that Asma and Shakil were involved in a relationship. According to witnesses, Soumen shot Asma, who was with her son, with his pistol and then gunned down Shakil. As the child tried to run away, the off-duty ASI caught him before shooting him dead.
Locals found Asma and Shakil lying on the floor, while the boy was found near the entrance of the market.
When a gun-wielding Soumen threatened the crowd by raising his weapon, the locals began attacking him with stones and brickbats. As Soumen dropped his pistol, the locals apprehended him and handed him over to the police.
During preliminary interrogation, Soumen said that Asma had an extramarital relationship with Shakil.
He came to Kushita early Sunday from Khulna by a bus and brought a pistol and 12 bullets with him.
At one stage of the altercation with Asma, Soumen got furious and opened fire on them, said Farhad Hossain Khan, additional superintendent of Special Branch police.
Soumen, hailing from Sadar upazila in Magura district, reportedly married Asma one and a half-years ago hiding information about his first wife and two sons.
