Rangpur schoolgirl gang-rape case: ASI Raihan among 3 remanded

A court in Rangpur on Wednesday placed Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Raihanul Islam on a five-day remand and two other women on three-day remand each in connection with the gang-rape of a ninth-grade schoolgirl.
Judge Snigdha Rani Chakraborty of Rangpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court granted Raihan a five-day remand and three-day remand for Sumaiya Akhter Meghla alias Aleya and Shurovi Akhter alias Somapti .
Inspector Saiful Islam of Rangpur Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the investigating officer (IO) of the case, on Thursday last produced accused Raihan and the two arrested women before the court and placed seven-day and three-day remand petitions for them respectively.
Rangpur PBI Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain confirmed granting of police remand in the interest of the intensive investigation into the case.
Earlier, two other arrested accused in the case, Babul Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad, in their confessional statement before the court on October 28 confessed their involvement in the gang rape and the court sent them to jail .
Police said ASI Raihan of the Detective Branch of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) had a love affair with the victim, a schoolgirl of Mainakuthi Kachutari area under Haragachh police station in the metropolis.
ASI Raihan tactfully took the schoolgirl to the rented house of one Sumaiya Akhter Meghla alias Aleya in Cigarette Company’s Kadar Pool area under Haragachh Police Station and raped her with the assistance of Meghla on October 23 last.
Later, Kalam and Babul-with the assistance of Meghla and her associate Shurovi-raped the schoolgirl in the house the next night, on October 24.
The incident came to light when the student fell ill following her gang-rape.
Later, the victim’s father filed a case against Raihan, Meghla and some unknown accused people in this connection with Haragachh police station of RpMP.
The case was transferred to the Rangpur PBI who arrested five persons from different parts of Rangpur and Lalmonirhat districts, police said.
