Sylhet Bureau :
Police Bureau of Investigation inspector Awlad Hossain has been made Investigation Officer for the case filed over custodial death of Raihan Ahmed in Sylhet city after the former Investigation Officer Mohidul Islam was infected with COVID-19.
PBI Sylhet office Special Superintendent Khaleduzzaman confirmed the rearrangement and said that police were yet to ascertain whereabouts of accused Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, suspended in-charge of the Bandar Bazar outpost.
New IO Awlad on Wednesday said that Assistant Sub-Inspector Ashike Elahi, who was placed on a 5-day remand and later hospitalised after he fell ill, was sent back to jail on Tuesday by the court after his remand period was over.
The police had claimed that Raihan, 35, compounder of a doctor chamber at Stadium Market in the city, died of mass beating in the city’s Kastaghar on early October 11 while he was trying to snatch money of a pedestrian.
But Raihan’s family complained that he was tortured to death by the police after they failed to realise Tk 10,000 from him as a bribe. Raihans widow filed a custodial death case with the Kotwali police on October 12.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police suspended Akbar, constable Harunur Rashid, Tauhid Mia and Titu Chandra Das on October 12 for torturing Raihan to death but Akbar managed to flee his workplace immediately after he was suspended.
Later, Sub-Inspector Hasan Uddin also was suspended for assisting Akbar to leave the outpost and concealing information in this connection.
The PBI arrested Elahi, Harunur, Tauhid and Titu, who were on duty at the outpost while Raihan was tortured.
Besides, Saidur Rahman, who had informed the police on early hours of October 11 that Raihan snatched his money from the Kastaghar area, was also arrested so far over the custodial death.
Meanwhile, three constables Delwar Hossainr, Saiful Islam and Shamim, who were on duty at the Bandar Bazar outpost when Raihan was tortured, gave the witness testimonies to the court under Section 164 on October 19.
