A dominant performance by the Indian spinners in the final session of Day 2 at Vizag has put the hosts in a commanding position on Friday.
England have lost half their side with just 103 runs on the board, still trailing India by 352 runs after spinners R Ashwin and Jayant Yadav struck important blows.
England’s innings started with a stutter as Mohammad Shami removed captain Alastair Cook with a peach of a delivery. Cook was unable to cope with the pace and movement and lost his off stump. Such was the intensity of the delivery that the off stump broke into half.
Joe Root and Haseeb Hameed weathered the early storm and stabilised the innings, taking England past the 50-run mark. But a terrible mix up between the two and some smart glovework by Wriddhiman Saha ensured Hameed’s promising innings was cut short as he was run-out for 13.
Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin kept troubling the English batsmen as the pitch started taking turn. Ben duckett was the next to go as he was cleaned by an Ashwin special for just 5, England were now in trouble at 72/3.
Root though continued with his counter-attacking cricket, bringing up his half-century in his 50th Test match. But the Yorkshireman played one shot too many and was eventually dismissed for 53 when he was caught in the deep by Umesh Yadav off R Ashwin.
Jayant Yadav then trapped Rajkot centurion Moeen Ali in front of the wicket to take his maiden Test wicket. Virat Kohli was quick to ask for the review after the on-field umpire had given his decision in favour of the batsman.
Eventually, England ended the day on 103/5 with the duo of Stokes and Bairstow unbeaten on 12 runs respectively.
Earlier, a 3-wicket burst from Moeen Ali restricted India to just 455 in their first innings after they had resumed on 317/4.
Ali sent back overnight centurion Virat Kohli, Wriddhiman Saha and Ravindra Jadeja in quick succession to put brakes on India’s innings.
But an impressive 64-run 8th wicket stand between Ashwin and debutant Jayant Yadav took India past the 400-run mark. Ashwin showed his skills as an all-rounder yet again as he scored another half century. Indian innings finally folded for 455 after both Ashwin and Jayant departed in search of quick runs.
