The Muslims in Rajshahi city like other parts of the country observed the holy Ashura on Wednesday marking the 10th day of Muharram with due religious solemnity and in a befitting manner.
The day was observed as a symbol of “sacrifice and mourning” recalling the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), in the battle of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram in Hijri 61.
Different religious organizations, including Islamic Foundation, observed the day through various programmes.
The Shi’a Muslims brought out a large processions known as Tazia in the city from Shaheb Bazar area and paraded main streets chanting “Hai Hussein, Hai Hussein”.
Besides, several processions were brought out from the city’s different areas including Dargapara, Seroil and Upashahar areas.
In the processions, the Shi’a Muslims expressed mourning and grief by flagellating themselves on the back with chains, beating their heads intending to connect them with Imam Hussain’s (RA) sufferings.
Other programmes of the day included Quran Khwani, Milad Mahfil, fasting and feeding of the destitute.
BSS from Rangpur adds: The holy Ashura, marking the tragic 10th day of Muharram, was observed in the disrtcit on Wednesday through various programmes with due religious fervour and solemnity.
The Muslims observed the day as a symbol of ‘sacrifice and mourning’ recalling the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein Ibne Ali (RA), younger grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), in the battle of Karbala in Iraq on that day in Hijri year of 61.
A huge ‘Tazia’ procession was brought out from Muslim Para area in the city with participation of hundreds of Muslim who chanted slogans ‘Hai Hussein, Hai Hussein.’
The programmes also included recitation from the Holy Qur’an, discussions and milad mahfils in the mosques, fasting and feeding of the poor and destitute people.
The Islamic Foundation organised a discussion on ‘Importance of Holy Ashura in Preserving Peace and Order in Society’ at its Resource Centre in Chatra union under Pirganj upazila. Chairman of Chatra union parishad Enamul Haque Shahin presided over the discussion.
