BPL match-fixing: Ashraful dumped for 8 years

Team owner Shihab for 10 years: Fined Tk 10 lakh and 20 lakh respectively; Two foreign players also face music

Former captain of Bangladesh National Cricket team and youngest centurion in Test Cricket Mohammad Ashraful has been banned for eight years in all kind of cricket competitions and was fined Tk 10,00,000 for engaged in match-fixing in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).The three-member special tribunal headed by Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury delivered the verdict in Gulshan on Wednesday. The other members of the tribunal are former cricketer Shakil Quashem and Ajmalul Hossain QC. The tribunal was formed by Bangladesh Cricket Board.On January 19, the full hearing of the tribunal began against nine accused over the allegations brought by the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).Earlier, the six — bowlers Mosharraf Hossain (Rubel) and Mahbubul Alam (Robin), former spinner Mohammad Rafique, English cricketer Darren Stevens, Gladiators owner Salim Chowdhury and CEO Gaurav Rawat — of the nine charged by ACSU were acquitted on February 26 while two — Mohammad Ashraful and Kaushal Lokuarachchi — confessed to their wrongdoings earlier. On June 4 last year, Ashraful sensationally confessed to spot-fixing, BCB temporarily suspended the player from all cricketing activities. Managing director and owner of Dhaka Gladiators Shihab Chowdhury has been banned for 10 years from all kind of activities related to cricket. Chowdhury was fined Tk 20,00,000 accused of spot-fixing during the BPL match between Dhaka Gladiators and Chittagong Kings.Bedides, player of Dhaka Gladiators Lou Vincent of New Zealand has been banned for three years while player of Dhaka Gladiators Kaushal Lokuarachchi of Sri Lanka has been banned for eighteen months for all kind of cricket meets.Earlier, Anti-Corruption and Security Unit(ACSU) of International Cricket Council inspected about the spot-fixing in last year’s BPL. Later, ACSU submitted their report to ICC.Mohammad Ashraful was the only man who pleaded him guilty. The others were found guilty after the inspection of ACSU and the disciplinary committee.Later, BCB formed a 10-member disciplinary committee to probe about the spot-fixing. The disciplinary committee formed a three-member special tribunal headed by Justice Khademul Hossain Chowdhury and he pronounced the verdict yesterday afternoon. The accused can appeal within 21 days after the verdict.
