Asian Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) Chair Charles Santiago has said Prak Sokhonn, as ASEAN Special Envoy to Myanmar, must now ensure that he meets with all stakeholders, including the National Unity Government (NUG), civil society, and detained leaders such as Aung San Suu Kyi.

“We welcome Cambodia’s repositioning to respect ASEAN’s stance to hold the junta accountable to the Five-Point Consensus,” said Santiago on Friday regarding Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen’s latest comments on Myanmar.

The APHR Chair said they have also been encouraged by comments from Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Saifuddin Abdullah, calling on the envoy to meet with the NUG and representatives of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC).”

“As the ASEAN Foreign Ministers meet this week, without a Myanmar representative, the bloc must use this as the opportunity to form a meaningful and cohesive response to the Myanmar crisis, one that helps the Myanmar people, ” said the APHR Chair.

This includes supporting local non-state actors and networks that the people already trust in order to distribute much-needed humanitarian assistance.
