The severe cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ over West Central Bay and adjoining area moved northwestwards and turned to a Cyclonic Storm, the weather office has said in its latest bulletin.
“It is likely to move in a northwesterly direction towards India to weaken into a Cyclonic Storm during the next 12 hours. Maritime ports of Bangladesh have been advised to keep hoisted Distant Warning Signal No. 2,” Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) latest bulletin valid for 24 hours originating 9am on Tuesday.
It said that light to moderate rain or thunder showers with lightning flashes and temporary gusty or stormy wind is likely to occur at most places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Dhaka Rajshahi divisions and at many places over Rangpur division with moderately to heavy falls.
However, the day temperature may fall slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country, it added.
The met office said that the storm is likely to weaken by Wednesday and moved towards North Andhra and Odisha coasts in India.
The weather system is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall at a few places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal Andhra. Heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Odisha from on Tuesday evening.
According to the Met office bulletin, the maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kms of the severe cyclonic storm centre is about 89 kph rising to 117 kph in gusts or squalls. Sea will remain high near the severe cyclonic centre.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist distant warning signal number 2 to warn ships living the ports of a depression at the sea.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued the heavy rainfall warning in different areas in the country.
Country’s maximum temperature on Monday was recorded 36.1 degrees Celsius at Rajshahi and minimum temperature on Tuesday was 20.5 degrees Celsius at Sylhet.
The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours till 6am on Tuesday was recorded 207 mm at Khepupara in Barishal.
