UNB, Dhaka :
Terming the killing of USAID staff Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Tanoy a ‘target killing’, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said such incidents are the manifestation of an international conspiracy.
“A vested quarter is carrying out such killings in recent times to destabilise the country,” he said while talking to reporters at the Secretariat. Noting that the miscreants who took part in the killing mission left behind some evidence on
the spot, the Home Minister said the mystery behind the incident will be debunked very soon.
Asked whether he thinks there is any slide in the law and order situation in the country, he replied in the negative, saying the overall law and order situation remains quite normal. Asaduzzaman also said the recent killings of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, RU professor Rezaul Karim Siddiquee and ex-Kashimpur Jail guard were isolated incidents. Members of law enforcement agencies are working round the clock to rein in the ‘target killings’, he said, adding: “We hope such killings will come to a zero level very soon.”
The Home Minister claimed that Bangladesh is now much more secure than any other countries in the world as most of those are these days facing terrorist attacks. Asked why police did not provide security to Xulhaz Mannan, who received death threat earlier, he expressed his ignorance, saying, “Of course, we should have given him security if he had sought so.” Replying to a query, the minister said those who are involved in such killings might have link to Jamaat, Shibir or BNP. “Their roots are the same.” Shibir men sometimes turn JMB, sometimes they work for al-Qaeda, Ansarullah Bangla Team and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami and sometimes they work under the BNP-led 20-party alliance in exchange for money, he said.
