Within the gap of 24 hours, the onion price increased by Tk.30 per kg in the retail markets of the port city with lame excuse of short supply and high price in the wholesale market, a number of consumers alleged.
The onion was sold in retail market on Saturday at Tk.55 to 60 per kg but in the afternoon of Sunday, this type of onion are being sold ranging from 80 to 90 taka subject to quality.
The retailers told that due to increase in wholesale market, they are compelled to sell with high price . On the other hand wholesalers blaming the high import price .
CAB Chittagong sources said following the conspiracy of the wholesalers creating artificial crisis in the market, the wholesalers as well as the retailers increased the price illegally.
Consumers blamed the concerned authorities for non-controlling the market as such the unscrupulous traders availing this opportunities in the name of short supply and high import cost.
Conscious circles sources said govt should took the control of onion selling through fair price shops after immediate import of onions from abroad.
It is learnt from the sources that of Khatungonj-Chaktai market of Chittagong that the unscrupulous traders in every Eidul Azha period, increase the prices of onions, garlics, ginzers and spices with the advantage of Korbani creating articificial crisis.
Sources said most of the wholesalers stocks huge quantities of onions in godown for taking advantage during Eidul Azha period.
Khatungonj Trade Association sources said the supply of onion from India lessened to maximum extents due to damage of onion cultivation following the devastating flood there.
Manager of Grameen Banijyalaiya of Khatungonj told this reporter that best quality onion of India is being sold at Tk.70-75 per kg on Sun day, Mayanmar origin sold at Tk.60-65 and local one sold at 75-80 but this types of onions were sold at Tk. 50, 55, and 40 on Thursday last in whole sale market.
CAB President urged the concerned authority to deploy monitoring team in wholesale markets to keep stable of the onion price during Eidul Azha, sources said.
