Arson attacks, vandalism mark 2nd day of hartal

Staff Reporter :The 2nd day of the nationwide 72-hour hartal of BNP-led alliance passed amid arson attacks and vandalism across the country on Monday. The vehicular movement was normal in city though the plying of long distance transports was virtually cut off on the highways. But the movement of trains and water vessels was normal amid schedule collapse. At least eight vehicles were torched by the hartal and blockade supporters. The miscreants also vandalized over 13 vehicles in several districts.The hartal began from 6:00am Sunday and it will continue till 6:00pm on Tuesday. In Munshiganj, hundreds of textbooks for the primary school students were burnt after miscreants hurled petrol bombs on a book-laden truck near the Jamaldi Bus Stand area in Gazaria upazila around 7:30am. The victim truck driver Harun Gazi, 40, was admitted to the local Upazila Health Complex. Meanwhile, miscreants also torched a bus in the Maowa old ferry ghat area under Lauhajang upazila on Sunday night, said Maowa naval outpost In-charge Md Yusuf . On the other hand, criminals burnt down some 14,000 chickens, setting fire to a covered van with petrol at Ramchandrapur in Muktagachha of Mymensingh district around 6:00am. The covered van was gutted and all the chickens it was carrying were also killed in the fire, police said.In capital, at least two rickshaw pullers were injured when three cocktails were exploded by a gang of unidentified miscreants near the Orphanage Road at Lalbagh around 7:15pm. They were identified and as Saddam, 34, and Dulal, 32. Another rickshaw-van puller was injured when three cocktails were exploded on the Johnson Road around 2:15pm. All the burn victims were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) instantly.  Meanwhile, two other cocktails were blasted in city’s Topkhana Road at 2:15pm.A gang of miscreants set fire to a passenger bus of Gabtali Link Paribahan near the Mazar Road area around 4:00pm. No one, however, was reportedly injured in the arson attack.Meanwhile, two other cocktails were blasted near Matsya Bhaban around 6:45pm.At least five crude bombs were recovered from Shantinagar area in the afternoon. In Rajshahi, miscreants set fire to a goods-laden truck in the Bhdra mor area in the city. In Sylhet, miscreants hurled at least three cocktail bombs in front of the city Women College at 7:30pm. In Barisal, the hartal supporters vandalized 13 auto-rickshaws at Natullabad around 7:30am. In Gaibandha, two trucks were torched in Palashbari upazila around 7:00am.
