Arrest warrant against RU Prof in dowry case

A Rajshahi court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against a Rajshahi University Professor in a dowry case for demanding Tk 50 lakh from his wife.
Rajshahi additional chief metropolitan magistrate Julfiqar Ullah passed the order after wife of Dr Md Hafizur Rahman, Professor of RU crop science and technology department, filed a complaint against his husband with the court.
Later, the court recorded the complaint as dowry case and ordered Baolia Police Station to investigate into the case, confirmed Advocate Shamsad Begum Mitali, who appeared on behalf of complainant.
Adv Mitali said that Professor Hafizur Rahman married the complainant on January 31 in 2004 and they had two children. But, Hafizur Rahman had long been harassing his wife physically and mentally for dowry. At last on April 30, Hafizur demanded Tk 50 lac form his wife. On his wife’s refusal, he left his wife and children in their rented-flat.
Officer-in-charge of Boalia Police Station Shahadat Hossain told New Nation that they did not received any court order over the matter till Tuesday noon.
However, Professor Hafizur Rahman could not be reached as his phone was found switched off despite repeated trying.
