UNB, Chittagong :
A court here on Monday issued a warrant for the arrest of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation and city Awami League president in a corruption case.
Judge SM Ataur Rahman of the Divisional Special Judge Court passed the order in the case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing wealth illegally.
ACC lawyer Mahmudul Haque said the arrest warrant came as Mohiuddin did not appear before the court on Monday fixed for recording deposition of the witnesses.
Court sources said, the ACC filed the case against the former CCC mayor during the army-backed caretaker government on December 2, 2007 for accumulating wealth worth Tk 123,491 beyond known sources and concealing information about assets to the tune of Tk 2,829,264. The court framed charges against him on February 5, 2009.
After the deposition of nine witnesses in the case, the High Court later stayed the case proceedings following a petition filed by Mohiuddin.
However, the HC withdrew the stay order on November 27 last year, directing the lower court to continue the trial proceedings. Later, the court fixed January 27 for recording deposition of other witnesses.
Meanwhile, four witnesses testified before the court on Monday. After their deposition, the court fixed February 16 for recording the statements of other witnesses.
