Pro-BNP professionals at a roundtable discussion on Friday expressed grave concern over the current standoff in the country and held the government responsible for it. They urged the government to take initiative of holding a fresh poll with participation of all political parties in the election.
Centre for Nationalism Studies (CNS) arranged the roundtable discussion on “Impediments in Nation Building and Way Forward” at the National Press Club in the city. Chairperson of the CNS Barrister Fatema Anwar chaired the function.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, journalist Sadek Khan, Professor of Jahangirnagar University Dr Dilara Chowdhury, former President of National Press Club Shaukat Mahmud and Development Consultant Mehboobur Rahman spoke in the programme, among others. Colonel (retd) Ashraf Al Deen presented the keynote paper.
Emajuddin Ahmed criticised the chief of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) for his comment and said that his statement was illegal and unconstitutional. “The law enforcers’ task is to maintain the law and order and to ensure the security of people’s life and property. But the BGB chief warned of carrying lethal weapons against the citizens,” saying it, he urged the government to
hold talks with the opposition parties instead of killing people.
Sadek Khan said, the government is responsible for the on-going political standoff. He called upon the government to end the deadlock, accepting the key demand of the BNP-led 20-party alliance- fresh polls under a non-party government system.
Shaukat Mahmud also echoed the same as Sadek Khan. He alleged that the government was killing the people of the country in a bid to cling to power.
