The people of 10 villages under Pirgachha upazila in the district are suffering much due to absence of a permanent bridge over the dead Teesta river at Chhawla area of the upazila.
Some 45,000 people of the villages including Bazrapara, Namapara, Shibdeb, Janatarbazar, Vuttarbazar Bairagipara and Mandalpara village are to cross a bamboo-made bridge over the river to come to the upazila headquarter amid risk, sources said.Business and public health services are seriously being hampered in the areas as the people living on both sides of the river cannot travel easily between the upazila headquarter owing to lack of a bridge over the river.
The school going children have to suffer much to reach their institutions through the bamboo bridge. Most of them are not able to go to school in the rainy season for fear of accidents on the bridge, locals alleged.
The bamboo bridge becomes risky in the monsoon. The bamboos get slippery and they cannot cross it easily, said Akkas Ali, a resident of Mandalpara area.
Moreover, locals have to reconstruct or repair the bamboo made bridge every year which is a burden for them, it is alleged.
Chhawla Union Parishad chairman Abdul Hakim said a permanent bridge is essential in the area to change the socio-economic condition of thousands of people at 10 villages in the upazila. They have already informed local MP of the matter, he added.
