Immunisation campaign: Around 11 lakh children to get MR vaccines in three dists

Under the joint auspices of Public Health Department, Public Health and Family Planning Ministry brisk preparations are afoot here to make the National MR (Measels and Rubella) immunization fortnight in 2 phases from March 18 to April 11, 2020 a success in Bagerhat district and its all the 9 Upazilas and 2 Pouirashavas.
In this connection Bagerhat District Public Health Department arranged a workshop on the topic in the auditorium of Civil Surgeon Office, Bagerhat with the local journalists of both print and electronic medias with Dr. Humayun Kabir, Civil Surgeon of Bagerhat in the chair on Tuesday in the morning in order to ventilate the matter widely among the people through the news medias.
The key note paper on the topic was presented by Dr. Faruk, Immunization Officer, Civil Surgeon Office, Bagerhat. He explained, Measels and Rubella are virus diseases. They are jointly known as MR. MR not only attacks the children, but also it can attack the aged people. If a pregnant mother is attacked with MR her baby may be attacked with the same. In some cases mother (herself) may die. In this perspective we should not neglect this disease. Bagerhat district Health department decided to immunize 3 lakh 27 thousand children aged from 9 months 10 years of the district against MR. In the first week of the campaign mainly the school students will be immunized from 1,825 centers including 1,625 schools of the district. As many as 3,950 vaccinators/immunizers and some 5,225 volunteers will perform the immunization work. This campaign will continue from 8 am to 3 pm every day excepting holidays. In the 2nd phase babies who will be dropped out from the first phase will be immunized in the 2nd phase. At that time the MR immunization campaign will also be conducted in the vulnerable areas.
In the work shop Adv. Md. Mozaffor Hossain, President of Bagerhat Press Club, Prof. ABM. Mosharraf Husain, Shaikh Ahsanul Karim, Prof. Mahfizur Rahman, Nakib Sirajul Haq, Israt Jahan and other journalists also spoke on the occasion.  
Dr. Humayun Kabir, Civil Surgeon. Bagerhat while was giving his presidential speech in the workshop told, the Government took an appreciable decision to eradicate MR form the country like polio. He urged the journalists of both print and electronic medias to help the all concerned to make the MR immunization Campaign a success in Bagerhat through ventilating the matter into their respective medias.
BSS from Rajshahi reports: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has set a target to bring around 92,154 babies from nine months to below 10 years of age under measles-rubella vaccination campaign to protect them from various diseases.
The RCC will conduct the campaign in school level from March 18 to 24 while the field level campaign will be carried out from March 28 to April 11. The decision was taken in an advocacy meeting held in city bhaban conference hall here on Wednesday with RCC Ward Councilor Nuruzzaman Tuku in the chair.
Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and Directorate General of Health Services supported the meeting that discussed and devised ways and means on how to make the campaign a total success collectively.
Panel Mayors Shariful Islam Babu and Rajab Ali, Divisional Director of Health Dr Gopendra Nath Acharya, Civil Surgeon Dr Enamul Haque, RCC Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin and Secretary Abu Hayat Rahmatuhllah addressed the meeting. RCC Chief Health Officer Dr AFM Anjuman Ara Begum illustrated the aspects of the campaign in her multimedia presentation.
In the meeting, health experts urged all concerned to make the forthcoming measles-rubella vaccination campaign a total success to save children’s lives.
They unanimously underscored the need for raising public awareness to ensure immunization to hundred percent children to protect them from various diseases.
During his keynote presentation, Dr Nurul Islam, Surveillance and Immunization Medical Officer of World Health Organisation, gave an overview of the campaign and its aspects.
Dr Gopendra Nath said vaccination is vital for saving lives of children. So all concerned should discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to enhance awareness among the public to ensure vaccination to cent percent children.
He added that the campaign will be conducted against measles and rubella (MR) targeting the children from nine months to under 10 years of age. Each of the children will be vaccinated with one dose of MR vaccine irrespective of their previous vaccination status. The mass vaccination is expected to have an impact to eliminate measles and control rubella.
Dr Gopen clarified that measles is one of the most infectious human diseases and can cause serious illness including death.
However, rubella infection among women, especially during early 3 months of pregnancy, has 90 percent chance to pass the virus to fetus resulting in miscarriage, fetal death, or congenital defects known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). The defects include cataracts, glaucoma and congenital heart disease, he added.
BSS from Rangpur adds: About 7 lakh children from 9 months to under 10-year age group will be immunized with one dose of measles-rubella (MR) vaccine in the forthcoming Measles-Rubella Campaign- 2020 in the district.

Campaign-2020′ arranged by the Civil Surgeon Office at its conference room in the city on Tuesday afternoon.
The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) of the Directorate General of Health Services, World Health Organisation (WHO), GAVI and UNICEF extended assistance in arranging the event.
Civil Surgeon Dr Hirombo Kumar Roy read-out keynote paper in the event on the campaign that will be conducted in two phases from March 18 to 24 next at primary level school and March 25 to April 12 next at community levels in the district.
Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Kaniz Sabiha and Surveillance Medical Officer of the Immunization and Vaccine Development Programme of WHO at the Civil Surgeon’s Office Dr Md Mahbubul Islam spoke.
The Civil Surgeon said three lakh six thousand and 610 students (class one to four) of 3,355 primary level educational institutions will be immunised with one dose of MR vaccine in the first phase.
“Besides, two-lakh 97 thousand and 571 children of the same age group will get one dose of MR vaccine in the second phase of the campaign at community levels,” he added.
He sought media cooperation in raising public awareness to make the forthcoming measles-rubella vaccination campaign in two phases for ensuring immunization of cent percent targeted children to protect them from various diseases.
Dr Sabiha termed measles as one of the most infectious human diseases and put importance on enhancing public awareness to ensure vaccination to cent percent children.
“Rubella infection among women, especially among pregnant mothers, may pass the virus to fetus resulting in miscarriage or congenital defects those might cause cataracts, glaucoma and congenital heart disease to the newborns,” she said.
