DNCC drafts own plans to curb disaster risk

Dhaka North City Corporation Panel Mayor Md. Jamal Mostafa on Sunday said that Army’s help would be needed to recover Dhaka’s rivers and canals.
“Most of the city canals, rivers and river banks have been grabbed by influential persons. It created unbearable crises including water stagnant in every rainy season. It is needed to recover and conduct dredging of all rivers and canals immediately. It is needed to take mega
projects in this regards. To implement such mega projects, the help of the patriot Army is a must,” the Panel Mayor said it in the corporations head quarters in Gulshan after a two day workshop on “Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plan.”
The workshop was organised by EU, UNISDR, World Bank and the DNCC.
The panel mayor also said that, the DNCC was trying to complete its own action plan to reduce disaster risk by this year.
“Every city needs to have its own action plan to reduce disaster risks. In this view, DNCC is taking its own action plan which will be completed by this year,” DNCC Panel Mayor said.
Project Director of ‘Urban Resilience Project, Tariq bin Yusuf said, the DNCC is taking plans to reduce disaster risks under the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)’s Sendai Framework.
He said, the DNCC has completed five out of 10 essentials under the Sendai Framework. The rest five essentials will be completed by next December.
